The cookery exam is around the corner ♥

Update on the practical exam!

The Home Economics 2014 tasks have been issued by the Department of Education and can be accessed  here jc_tasks_2014 (1)

a95c5203058ec6e3411d91cdf15c31e0

The cookery practical will take place before the Easter holidays between the 31st of March and the 11th of April. The final dates will be released in the next week.

The cookery exam is worth 35% of the overall grade for Junior Certificate Home Economics. That is 210 marks (H) and 270 (0) . The remaining 90 marks is awarded for the textile craft you have completed. Firstly you will be given 30 minutes for your preparation before the exam. During this time the examiner will not be in the room. The task that you have selected will have to be completed within 90 minutes. This is important when you are researching and selecting your different dishes. Students must evaluate their dish in the exam, if this is not completed within the 90 minutes, marks will be lost!

A few helpful tips √

  1. Maximum use should be made of fresh ingredients and the use of convenience foods should be kept to a minimum to allow candidates to demonstrate their culinary skills and application of cooking principles.
  2. Advance preparation of ingredients should be minimal i.e. ingredients may be weighed, vegetables may be washed but not peeled or chopped etc.
  3. Candidates will be required to clean tools and equipment used as part of the task and to leave them on the table until checked by examiner.

The students were required to enter their favourite restaurant dish suitable for two people, main course only! The deadline was last week so now we would like  to show you our impressive dishes. The competition gave the students an opportunity to experiment with different ingredients, herbs, spices, healthier alternatives and thinking outside the box! The girls used rapeseed oil and recognised the benefits of using rapeseed oil when cooking http://www.donegalrapeseedoilco.com/HealthNutrition.htm.

Eating Disorder Awareness Week in St Dominic’s Secondary School #HomeEconomics

unnamedNational Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW) began last Monday, not only nationally but here in St Dominic’s Secondary School also. Eating disorders depict more about the person than the food that is or is not eaten. Whether a person is anorexic, bulimic or binge eating, the disorder often discloses an issue of control, vulnerability and fear in the sufferer. It reveals itself on a physical level and often leads friends and family to focus on the extra weight, or the skin and bones, instead of the mental health element of trying to control weight and body image issues.

Filling in the gaps!

Eating disorders can be grouped by a variety of eating behaviours such as: Self-starvation – by fasting and/or food restriction. Purging -by self-induced vomiting, over-exercising, or laxative abuse. Bingeing – by consuming quantities of food beyond what the body needs to satisfy hunger.

Eating disorders can be seen as a way of coping with emotional distress, or as a symptom of underlying issues. Eating disorders are not primarily about food people can and do recover. Eating disorders can affect anyone! (BODYWHYS, 2014)

Eating disorders can be quite damaging to the body, both physically and emotionally, and people can get trapped or become captured in the destructive cycle of the eating disorder without knowing how to cope with it. Eating disorders are not solely based on food and weight, but also a person’s identity and self-confidence. Eating disorders may have a detrimental impact on family and friends.

Over the past week the learners have been busy researching the main eating disorders:  Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. What causes an eating disorder? Celebrities who have suffered from an eating disorder in particular Demi Lovato, Lindsay Lohan and Kesha. We looked at how to recognise different signs and symptoms and the importance of taking time out to talk about your problems instead of hiding them as Demi Lovato stated “Recovery doesn’t have a day off…..I don’t think there is a finish line I just think you keep going”(Lovato, 2012). Finally, the girls designed awareness posters for the school and they are quite thought provoking! Well done to all involved!

At this point it is important to note that if any student requires any added information or support you can ask any teacher, especially Ms Mills and Ms Cogavin they will all be more than willing to help! A problem shared is a problem halved!

Don’t knock it until you try it! Taste testing with a twist

A taste testing and sensory analysis workshop on the different classifications of fruit took place in room 40 last week when Ms Mills and Ms Cogavin realised that many students had never tasted some of the fresh fruit that are available in our local supermarkets. The students needed some experience with the food first therefore they had a number of classes focused on the importance of fruit in their daily diets. The students were hesitant at first to try the new fruits however once they started to taste the scrumptious, tasty, yummy, mouth-watering fruit they were reluctant to stop!

“Sensory Analysis is a scientific discipline used to evoke, measure, analyse and interpret reactions to those characteristics of foods and materials as they are perceived by the senses of sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing”

The students examined the fruits with the use of their sense organs i.e. sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. They also used their five senses to examine the characteristics, the appearance, flavour aroma, texture and sound of the fruit.

Maith sibh cailíní! 🙂

Top study hacks to improve your grades in Home Economics ♥

adb5bda7179833ff0f872131c67088b2

1. Go for a walk or a light jog to boost your memory and your concentration. Aim to take at least 30 minutes out of your day girls to exercise to improve your performance in exams.

1b533cac6652cf67f871d1daf0dc9e52

2. Labhair amach os ard! Read out aloud instead of reading into yourself.

3. Make flashcards and stick post-its up with definitions, key points on topics on the fridge, on your mirror, on the walls and even in your wardrobe…places where you regularly go and sit!

4. Give yourself a  small treat or a reward when you complete a section, topic or chapter. Try to make things fun!

5.Peer teach,  teach each other. Test yourself to see if you understand the information by teaching your friend about it for example, the properties, functions, RDA, sources and deficiencies of Vitamin B.

6. Study in a group. Studying together in groups will help you discuss topics and how to answer past questions, share resources and help keep each other motivated.

7. Make mind maps for each topic on one page! ‘All in one method’ to studying !

8. Draw pictures to help you remember easier! Picture paints a thousand words.

9. Refrain from using social media Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or twitter (unless it is to follow @msmillshomeec and for educational purposes! These are distracting when you are studying!

10. Use Youtube to help explain some areas of the course that you find difficult. Youtube can explain the information in a short time frame.

11. Take study breaks every 40 minutes as your focus and concentration is not as effective after long periods of times. You will not absorb the information!

12. Cleachtadh a dhéanann máistreacht– practice, practice, practice! Practicing sample answers to past exam questions can help train your brain to take in information. Designate yourself the allocated time for each question and look at the breakdown of your exam in the previous posts! 6TH years there is a new trial paper available here.

13. Do not pull an all-nighter!  Make sure to get enough sleep the nights leading up to your exams.

14Be positive– you have come so far, be proud of yourselves girls ♥

A pinch of patience a dash of kindness a spoonful of laughter and a heap of smiles was to be seen during the Cool Dudes cooking programme on Wednesday in St. Dominics. The dirty dishes certainly had a tale to tell! The girls learned all about the importance of including fibre in their diets, which foods have a high fibre content, the Recommended Daily Allowance(RDA) of fibre (25g-30g per day) content and whipped up a dreamy wholesome vegetable soup and wholemeal scones that were just as tasty and delicious as white scones. The wholemeal scones provide us with a better source of fibre compared to white scones and provide us with a slow release of energy that will keep your hunger locked up! A great evening all round, sár obair cailíní! comhghairdeachas!
