TY tasty treats Tuesday with a twist! Púca, púca is mise an púca!

We had another busy morning in the Home Economics kitchen today. The transition years(TY) were busy baking and decorating cupcakes to sell at break time to help raise some ha’pennies for their interior design module. The ladies have completed their mood boards and are currently working on their 3D model to bring their inspirations to life. We will have a busy few weeks ahead of us after midterm however “Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. Maith sibh cailíní, táim buíoch as an obair a rinne sibh inniu.

Under the green thumb in St Dominic’s Secondary School Ballyfermot

Green Schools Awareness Week 6th of October – 10th October 2014

We would like to raise awareness and enthuse the school to embrace that green is good. We would also like to bring a bit of rurality into citylife and to start being aware of  students’ surroundings with perhaps down the road, a goal to hold a mini farmers market in the school during weekends, selling the students produce. Here in St Dominic’s Secondary School we would like to hit home how our environment can be enjoyed in many ways through knowledge and practical steps of growing or own food and maintaining our school garden.  With that in mind we are looking forward to having Peter Donegan (website) with us in school tomorrow as part of our green schools awareness week to help us kick start our vision.

Let our gardens be a canvas to the imagination, after all,  life is about using the whole box of crayons.

Never underestimate the power of a woman with a sewing machine ♥

From old to new, it’s amazing what you can do! Today in the TY Home Economics interior design module the ladies put their nifty sewing skills to the test, as I’m sure they are a bit rusty from the junior certificate 👀! The ladies as part of their interior design module are learning fun and creative ways to upcycle furniture, learn practical life skills and give the Home Economics kitchens a new lease of life. The ladies began by examining a range of used fabrics that I brought in to show them, an old denim jumper, bed linen and old curtains. I then showed them a selection of bunting that I came across at a local country market on Sunday. Bunting is the perfect project for the new sewist, the young and hip sewist, or the returning to sewing sewist! I gave the students a bunting template to pin onto to their chosen fabric and cut out, keeping in mind the key safety guidelines while sewing! The ladies became reacquainted with the sewing machine and for some, it was love at first stitch! Take a look at how far the bunting has come along in today’s class. We will look forward to flying them high in the Home Economics room and complete cute, unique and quirky bunting for both kitchens! Sewing machines at the ready- sew let’s do this.
Creativity is contagious pass it on

A Sunday evening well spent supporting local country markets and craft fairs.

Today I visited Castletown country market and craft fair which takes place on the last Sunday of the month, between March and October from 10am to 6pm. If you have a love for food like myself, this market is a must see! The market supplies a wealth of local and artisan produce and a range of wonderful handmade craft stalls.

Introducing St Dominic’s Secondary School Ballyfermot’s TY blog- TickTalkwithNavySocks

The TY digital media module affords students the opportunity to produce a transition year blog. The Digital media class discuss their vision for the blog and agree on the key areas, topics and events that would be most appealing to teenagers to follow. This module offers a great diversity of experiences for the students and develops some life-long skills such as designing, decision making skills, planning skills, team-work skills, how to work to deadlines, privacy management, creative thinking, digital literacy and how to be a responsible digital citizen.

The blog is still under construction but take a look at how far the ‘girls with the navy socks’ have come http://www.ticktalkwithnavysocks.wordpress.com

Finding a healthy balance

While Kerry hold the All- Ireland title here in St Dominic’s, Donegal native Ms Mills is not willing to give up that easy. Today marked the first gaelic football training session in school. It was great to see so many ladies attend this evening. Training will continue every Wednesday evening from 3.15pm until 4.15pm. Energy input + Energy Output = Balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
