Taking a deep look at nutritional labeling

Energy is measured in kilocalories  (kcal) or kilojoules (kJ)

In class today we look at energy balance and how to calculate the energy value in KJ and Kcals.

Energy balance is reached when :

energy intake  = energy output

If energy intake is greater than energy output, this means being overweight or obese

¨If energy intake is less than energy output, this means being underweight

¨Empty kilocalories provide energy but do not supply the body with any nutritional value, e.g. Soft drinks

We also looked at the factors affecting  our energy requirements.

For homework the class needed to get the cameras out, open up the cupboards and root to find example of nutritional labels. Take a look at some examples of the food and energy value
